Illamasqua Lipstick Palette: Review & Swatches

Illamasqua is one of my favourite brands but until recently I'd never actually bought one of their lipsticks. Every time I was at a counter I'd try to choose between picking a safe colour or something crazy, like the teal Apocalips, and every time I'd end up leaving with another blush to add to my collection instead.

Recently Illamasqua recently released a lipstick palette containing four of their best sellers. I just can't resist a good palette and I thought it would be the perfect introduction to the range.

The palette itself is exactly the same as their eyeshadow and liquid metal palettes.

Clockwise from the top: Fable, Plunge, Corrupt and Over

Fable is a soft rosy pink. Compared to the other pinks in the palette Fable looks almost peachy, but when worn it's just a natural, lovely pink for everyday wear.

Plunge is a bright mauve-ish baby pink. It's pale, but doesn't have an obvious white cast, at least not against my pale skintone. I love the colour and the matte finish gives it a mod feel.

Corrupt is a warm bright pink. This one has the creamiest formula.

Over is a bright coral. It's a really fun colour, almost neon, and probably my favourite of the palette just because I have nothing quite like it.

All four shades are matte. Not the velvety matte with a slight sheen that's all the rage right now, but true matte's. Think MAC's Ruby Woo. I know some people can't stand that kind of formula. I love it. Only a handful of brands make lipsticks this matte but I think it's a very classic finish.

L-R: Fable, Plunge, Corrupt, Over

Despite how matte the formula is I don't find it hard to work with at all. In fact they're probably the creamiest and least drying mattes I've used. If you've never tried a really matte lipstick Illamasqua's could be a slight shock to the system though. They don't have the same slip as a regular lipstick, so you have to be a little more forceful when applying. The matte finish isn't forgiving so it's a good idea to prep with a lip exfoliater (sugar and olive oil is my favourite pantry mix).

All four colours are extremely pigmented. Corrupt is just a pigment bomb, you only need one ultra thin layer for high voltage, fully opaque colour.

The wear time is awesome. I've worn all four shades to work and Plunge was the only one that needed touching up (just the once). Fable is a natural enough colour that slight fading is barely noticeable, and Corrupt and Over just don't budge.

I think Illamasqua did a great job putting this palette together. The colours are fun, bright,  bold and just a little different to what other brands are putting out there, but they aren't scary. As long as you don't mind a matte lip, there's something here for everyone.

I just can't believe I waited so long to explore Illamasqua's lipstick range. I've already purchased a full size red, and I have many more shades on the wishlist!

The Lipstick Palette retails for $53 and is available at selected Myer stores as well as the Myer online store. All four shades in this palette are part of Illamasqua's permanent range and they retail for $25 each.

What's your favorite lipstick finish?

  1. This is so pretty! My favourite lipstick type is probably something moisturising with some shine. I tend to wear stains, balms or glosses though. Sometimes I feel lipstick can look a little too overdone when no one around me wears it!

  2. I would LOVE to try Over :) I have nothing like it in my collection

  3. Over looks awesome. I don't think I own any true true matte lipsticks... I think most of mine are closer to a satin/matte finish...
